The most familiar type of Woodworm in Northern Ireland is the Common Furniture Beetle. These are attracted to a range of timbers including the sapwoods, heartwood if decayed and old plywood.
The Woodworm cause damage by tunnelling into the wood, generally along the grain. These tunnels contain loose bore dust with the exit holes around 1.5 – 2mm in diameter.
Indications of a Woodworm problem:
Small round holes in your woodwork (they look like the holes in a dartboard)
Very fine dust around or below the holes
Crumbly edges on boards or joists
You may see beetles near these holes or in other parts of the house
Even if holes are not visible, you might find the fine dust falling from the back or underside of furniture
